THE QUEEN Nanny Necklace features a bust of Jamaica's only female national hero Grannie Nanny. Grannie Nanny was born in present day Ghana and travelled to Jamaica during the transatlantic slave trade. Some legends say she was an Akan Queen, others a merchant, and still others a runaway enslaved African born on the island of Xaymaca. Much of the oral narratives about her life say she was never enslaved. She was a leader, military tactician, and strategist with a strong spiritual resonance who was instrumental in several maroon-led freedom uprisings. The Jamaican Maroons fought an 84 year war with the British in the 18th century. The war ended with the signing of a Peace Treaty and granting of maroon lands. Queen Nanny was a pan-maroon and pan-African leader who believed in the common goal of freedom for all enslaved Africans on the island of Xaymaca and abroad.
