THE BAULE Sun Stud Earrings

$107.00

THE BAOULE Sun Stud Earrings are a miniature version of the classic Baoule Sun bead design. Each piece features delicate detailing carefully crafted to mimic the filigree like texture of original Baoule bead work. The Baoule people are a group indigenous to Western Africa known for their rich brass and gold smithing culture. They used as beads for ceremonial purposes for centuries. Larger versions of gold beads like these might be passed down as part of a matrilineal family’s sacred inheritance, which is made of precious objects that are kept as a shrine to the family’s ancestors. They are also used in ceremonies to demonstrate the head of the family’s wealth. Each bead is named after a common or proverbial object, such as "bamboo door", "setting sun," or "sun and moon" and there is a saying attached to each name. Circular beads, like this design, have special significance in Baoule culture and are sometimes given to a bride’s family as a symbol of the groom’s intent to marry. Made using the traditional lost wax method.
