THE NSIREWA Stud Earrings feature the Adinkra symbol Nsirewa, which features four interconnected cowrie shells. It is a represents unity, togetherness, harmony and happiness. Cowries were traditionally used as currency. The Twi word for cowrie 'sedee' was anglicized to 'cedis' and is now the name for the national currency of Ghana. Cowries are also associated with the sacred, femininity, fertility and overall wholeness. The interlocking cowries represent the harmony and unbreakable bonds forged between us and those we love. Adinkra symbols were originally created by the Bono people of Gyaman. They were named after the Gyaman King Nana Kwado Agyemang Adinkra. The symbols were later adopted into the proverbial lexicon of the Ashanti peoples of West Africa.
