THE LIBERIA Coin Necklace is handcrafted from an antique 1930's authentic Liberian coin. It is made with precious metals using the traditional lost-wax casting technique. Liberia was the first African nation to declare its independence in 1847. The nation originated as a settlement of the American Colonization Society. They became a political elite of African-Americans that believed freedom for blacks was only possible in Africa. Conflicts between African-American settlers and Indigenous people of the land lead to strife and political unrest for decades. In 2017 the nation held its first fully democratic elections.
